Gran Pavese: The Flag Project

50 Flags

50 Artists

This is an introduction to a private collection of modern art that started off in 1988 when 50 talented artists from 10 countries were invited to make a design for a flag. No special theme, just their individual expression of a flag. We were curious how they would exploit this unusual medium since the images would not be hanging to a wall but in the air, outdoors or indoors. For everyone to see and to enjoy.

"To me flags have always seemed to be a very beautiful way of telling people that something is happening. The wind does something with a flat surface, and that's basically a kind of thing that appeals to me."

Bridget Riley

Artist

"Flags are capable of reinforcing symbolic content, provided that they are rightly designed."

Ronnie Cutrone

Artist

"Because the flag moves, it increases the dynamic of the drawing. The two figures I drew are really going to dance."

Reint Vegt

Artist

In 1988 the Dutch Gran Pavese Foundation launched a unique outdoor exhibition of 50 exclusive works of contemporary art presented as flags on the dikes of Holland.

50 Artists from all over the world designed their very individual interpretation of medium ‘flag’. Among them Bridget Riley (UK) and Alighiero Boetti (Italy); Ay-O (Japan); Bazile and Messager (France); Keith Haring and Bill Copley (USA) and many more.
